Grace, a novice driver, commenced driving lessons with me, and we were making commendable progress until the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent national and local lockdowns disrupted our driving lessons. We resumed the lessons when restrictions eased, but we opted to use Grace’s car since she was engaging in private practice with her father, who even joined us on one occasion to identify areas that necessitated improvement.

We focused on a structured approach to the lessons, with a particular emphasis on planning, an area in which Grace, like many new drivers, struggled. She had a tendency to drive into situations that could have been easily avoided had she looked further ahead. We worked to enhance her ability to assess the road ahead and develop the skills required to make on-the-move decisions in ever-changing road situations.

The DVSA’s cancellation and rescheduling of various driving tests made it challenging to schedule a test. Despite the setbacks, Grace remained determined and focused. Eventually, test day arrived, and Grace passed her driving test for the first time, making only three driver errors.

This achievement underscores the importance of a focused goal. Even the COVID-19 pandemic could not deter Grace from obtaining her driving license.
