Zara Afzal – Driving Lessons Lordswood

Zara began her driving lessons with no experience.

Zara followed in the footsteps of her twin sister Zaina, who passed her driving test with our guidance in January this year.

Zara has autism, so her confidence could change from one minute to the next. At times, she would not always spot danger early enough, so she could drive into situations that could be avoided. We took her training slowly, highlighted her successes, and reassured Zara when she felt like quitting, since she often felt that she would never be able to drive. She slowly changed her thoughts to, “I may actually be able to do this.”

As the weeks and months went by, Zara slowly changed from a few tears to smiles. She could see for herself that her driving was improving, which helped build her confidence.

Zaina, her twin sister, would often sit in the rear of our car to offer moral support, which helped a lot.

Test day seemed like it would never arrive, but as night follows day, it arrived. Zara had her sister’s support, as she came with us for a pre-test drive and the test itself. Zara produced a great drive and passed her driving test on the 1st attempt with only 1 driver fault. It was a truly amazing result and is a testament to the work Zara put into her driving lessons.

It just proves that everything is possible with the correct mindset. A can-do attitude goes a long way in reaching your goals. Zara, I hope you enjoy your new independence.

What did Zara think about her driving lessons –

Thanks to his patience and support, I ended up passing first time, which is something I honestly didn’t believe I could do at the beginning. The extra driving lessons before my driving test also helped me feel much more prepared because we focused on my weaknesses and worked through them properly.

I struggled a lot at the start with concentration, processing information quickly and reacting fast enough whilst driving when it comes to making a decision. Sometimes I would even cry during the driving lessons because I got overwhelmed or frustrated with myself and often said I wanted to give up. With reassurance and looking back it was honestly worth it because it helped me learn from my mistakes instead of dwelling on them.

My Driving Instructor always reminded me that every time I drive, I improve more than the last lesson, which helped my mindset and confidence.
